WILLOWBROOK, Los Angeles County — October 28, 2026. A proposed extension to the Compton Creek Trail would add approximately 0.75 mile of multi-use path in unincorporated Willowbrook, creating a planned 1.5-mile recreational loop when combined with an existing trail on the opposite bank.

Where would the new trail run?

Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation describes a route along the western bank of Compton Creek between 118th Street and El Segundo Boulevard. The new trail would parallel the existing path along the eastern bank of the creek. The project is identified as Compton Creek Trail Phase III in an environmental filing the county submitted on March 2, 2026.

What features are planned?

The state filing describes a decomposed-granite walking and cycling surface, drought-tolerant landscaping with native California plants and shade trees, and stormwater features intended to help manage and filter runoff. Plans also include seating, interpretive signs, mile markers, enhanced fencing, civic art installations and decorative entry gateways.

Is the loop open?

The March record is a Notice of Exemption under the California Environmental Quality Act, not an opening announcement. It does not prove that construction is complete, that the full 1.5-mile loop is accessible, or that an event is taking place on the trail today. Visitors should check with County Parks before relying on the proposed extension for a walking route.

Why a local trail matters

A path set away from busy roads could offer nearby residents a place for recreation and active transportation, especially if improved shade and public access are maintained. The plans envision an environmental and educational role for the creek corridor as well as physical activity. But actual benefits depend on construction, maintenance, safety, wayfinding and neighborhood connectivity.

What should residents ask about?

Relevant questions include trail entrances, lighting and hours, construction staging, conditions during rain, access for people with mobility disabilities and how the existing trail connects to the new portion. The state filing identifies County Parks planner Jui Ing Chien, (626) 588-5317, as a contact for project questions.
